BURNOUT STRETCHES FUEL AT DAYTONA
Burnout made the fuel last over a final 28 lap green flag run to win the Turbocharged Series opener at Daytona.
After sitting on the pole once more Lanz lost the lead early to Burnout as the caution came out for a lagstorm on Lap 4. Drillz took the lead on the ensuing Lap 7 restart, losing it to Charter who then in turn lost it to Lanz. Another lagstorm on Lap 15 brought out the second caution of the day, with Burnout quickly taking the lead from Simms (who did not pit) on the lap 20 restart. A multi car crash off Turn 4 on Lap 25 brought out the third caution, and then a large restart crash on Lap 28 brought out the fourth caution and gave the lead to Lanz.
Kart Rossi did not pit to take the lead on Lap 31, Popowitch passed him for a short while to take the lead on Laps 35 and 36 before Lanz passed him and lead until green flag pitstops at Lap 57-65. Lanz retained the lead after these pitstops but a Lap 76 caution for a crash from Drillz meant that he had to stay out on the Lap 80 restart in order to claim the bonus point for leading at halfway. Delux inherited the lead after Lanz pitted on the first lap of the green flag run, but Burnout once again took over the top spot on Lap 94. He kept it until Drillz's #21 Ford suffered connection issues, stopping on the track and causing the 6th and then 7th cautions of the night, Charter stealing the lead by a half a nose when the caution came out.
Burnout however had a better pitstop than Charter so only lost one lap of leading, leading until Lap 129 when a crash with Aniro while lapping him meant that Burnout lost the lead to Domotec for 3 laps. The 8th caution was called for this incident, and a severe lagstorm while under caution on lap 131 meant that the race had to be red flagged for 5 minutes. The race got underway, and Delux took the lead with a fast pitstop, but there were questions as to whether he got all the fuel he wanted in the car, as a sacrifice for getting off pitlane so fast. Delux took a commanding lead on the Lap 133 restart and all cars began to save fuel for the finish, Burnout shadowing Delux as they came to the final ten laps.
Lanz and Charter duelled for 3rd place for many laps before Lanz finally got past him, but with just four laps to go, Delux saw that he hadn't made the fuel last and had to pit on Lap 156 for a small amount of fuel. Simms also had to pit for fuel. Burnout now had a large lead over 2nd place Lanz and could coast to the finish, managing the fuel consumption, running out just as the checkered flag waved.
