LANZ WINS MEXICO DUEL
Lanz outdueled Dede to win the second race of the Turbocharged Series at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
The controversy began before the race had even got underway, with problems with getting the race cars to Mexico in order to run them in the race. Some drivers had to borrow cars from other teams, painting on their own number themselves! That wasn't it however, as many drivers complained about the safety of the track, the large haybales on the inside of the turns being a large concern to the drivers.
Dede qualified his #5 Quaker State Chevy on the pole position, with Delux earning a suprising front row start alongside him in his #18 Combos Toyota. A chaotic start to the race meant a large crash in one of the controversial haybales in turn 1 of the first lap, but Dede managed to get away from the pole to lead the first lap. It wasn't long before Delux was making a challenge however, forcing his way to the lead at the start of the third lap. Dede attempted to make a challenge to take it back out of the turn 6 hairpin on the third lap, but they both careered off the track and into those pesky haybales to cause the first Caution of the race.
Lanz, driving the #46 AAMCO Chevy inherited the lead after this crash, and kept it on the Lap 6 restart, where Dede made a mistake and lost even more positions to the leader. A lap 12 caution due to Charter's #29 Budweiser Chevy being stopped in Turn 1 allowed Dede to retake the lead, however, he did so by not pitting when the rest of the field took on fresh rubber.
Delux quickly took the lead on the Lap 15 restart, and kept it until on Lap 17 Lanz tried to make a pass for the lead on the outside of Turn 4, and mayhem ensued. Lanz and Delux were both thrown off the track, and while rejoining got hit by Slick who couldn't slow his #21 Motorcraft Ford down in time. Lanz came out of the carnage with the lead however - and surprisingly the track was clear, and no caution was called.
Lanz kept the lead until Lap 30, when a cycle of green flag pitstops allowed Delux to lead 3 laps. Once Delux had pitted Lanz regained the lead and a Lap 42 caution for Charter's once again stopped car, this time in turn 8, bunched the field back up.
Lanz once again stayed out to claim the bonus points for leading at halfway, and once again he pitted on Lap 46 for new tyres and fuel as soon as he had taken them. At a road course however, this was likely to be less costly than at Daytona - he wasn't likely to lose a lap by doing it. Delux lead Lap 47, but then on Lap 48 got massively sideways on the grass off of turn 3, and Dede managed to sneak by. Charter retired his car from the race on Lap 51, damage from multiple crashes forcing him to stop running.
On lap 60, lapped cars of Popo Simms and Slick had a large crash into turn 1 right in front of leader Dede. Dede managed to get through the crash unscathed, and also managed to survive an ensuing round of yellow flag pitstops with the lead. Simms however caused contact on pitroad when he parked his #24 DuPont Chevy halfway into Slick's pitstall, and he was subsequently held in pitlane for one lap on the lap 63 restart.
Dede pulled out a reasonable lead, but both would have to stop for tyres again before the end of the race. Lanz kept chipping away at his advantage, pitting for tyres with 15 laps to go, which Dede immediately reacted to, however he had a very messy pitlane entry and lost time to Lanz. They started an epic battle for the lead with 11 laps to go. Lanz passed Dede on Lap 80, only to make a mistake in the final chicane and be repassed. They raced bumper to bumper all the way through Laps 81 and 82 and then on Lap 83, exiting the turn 6 hairpin their cars locked together, hit the haybales, and then they both immediately turned to the road, continuing their battle!
Lanz finally pulled the deciding pass into the final chicane at the end of Lap 83, and Dede kept on his bumper for another couple of laps before Lanz pulled a gap to cross the line first!
The race was a success, but the track organisers are already working on removing the haybales before next years Rising Star Series race!
