New Point System Comparisons Empty New Point System Comparisons

Post  Burnout Fri Mar 11, 2011 1:21 pm

I took some time and crunched how the Turbocharged Series championship would've turned out using the two new point system ideas.

    ===================================
    SYSTEM #1: WEIGHTED POINTS

The first point system idea is to use weighted points. This system would award a fixed number of points for the race winner and the last place finisher. As usual though, if anyone left the race before halfway, half points would be given.

Here are the final standings from the Turbocharged Series IF the weighted points system was used (100 points for the win, 50 for last place if that driver lasts until past halfway). Bonus points would remain five points for halfway and leading a lap in the first 20.

    STANDINGS vs Turbocharged Series
    1st - Shyguy - 613
    2nd - Burnout - 537
    3rd - Lanz - 453 [+1]
    4th - Popowitch - 418 [-1]
    5th - Fsv - 401
    6th - Delux - 241 [+1]
    7th - Burn - 218 [-1]
    8th - Slick - 197
    9th - Ranee - 151 [+1]
    10th - Charter - 149 [-1]
    11th - Kooler - 116
    12th - Lexx - 110
    13th - Klutch - 90 [+1]
    14th - Kartrossi - 88 [-1]
    15th - Drillz - 75
    16th - Trent - 75
    17th - Xzeal - 60
    18th - Dide Dide - 55
    T-19 - AKIL 25
    T-19 - Schumacher 25
    T-19 - DOC 25

    NOTES
    -----
    - Lanz would've gotten to the podium by virtue of finishing relatively well in larger fields. At the beginning of the year, the races didn't feature many players so it paid off for him in the long run. He ended up creaming 4th and 5th place by comparison to the real Turbocharged Series points where he got 4th place.

    - Burn mainly raced in smaller fields, whereas Delux raced in larger fields. Burn didn't have the best of finishes and hit hurt him a bit more due to the sharp drop in points in five, six car races.

    - Burnout's runner-up ended up being a larger deficit over Shyguy. Burnout had a few finishes that awarded less points than the real season did and ended up being a harder gap to close.

    ======================================
    SYSTEM #2: NASCAR-like POINTS

The second idea is to use a point system very similar to NASCAR. Points would be awarded depending on how many people compete. In a 10 player race, last place would earn 1 point and first place would earn 10 points plus a one point win bonus (instead of 3, scaling down to SCARTS). Any bonuses earned from laps led and halfway would also award one point bonuses.

    STANDINGS vs Turbocharged Series
    1st - Shyguy - 52
    2nd - Burnout - 38
    3rd - Lanz - 36 [+1]
    4th - Popowitch - 22 [-1]
    5th - Fsv - 21
    6th - Slick - 18 [+2]
    7th - Delux - 15
    8th - Burn - 12 [-2]
    9th - Ranee - 11 [+1]
    10th - Charter - 10 [-1]
    11th - Klutch - 9 [+3]
    12th - Lexx - 8
    13th - Trent - 6 [+3]
    14th - Kooler - 5 [-3]
    15th - Kartrossi - 4 [-2]
    16th - Drillz - 4 [-1]
    17th - Xzeal - 3
    18th - Dide Dide - 2
    T-19 - AKIL - 1
    T-19 - Schumacher - 1
    T-19 - DOC - 1

    NOTES
    -----
    - The most notable difference vs. the weighted points is that Klutch and Trent finished 3 positions higher than the actual Turbocharged Series standings. That is due to both of them competing in the race that contianed the most drivers. The interesting thing is that Klutch (finished 3rd at Indy) outpointed Lexx (won Daytona). That shows how powerful the points were with a larger field.

    - Lanz once again ended up beating Popowitch for the podium and ALMOST beat Burnout for 2nd place. Lanz made only five starts (Burnout had six starts including a drop) but was finishing consistently well in larger fields. Many of Burnout's strong finishes were in smaller fields. It's amazing how close that got.

    - Slick gained two spots due to two strong 2nd place finishes. Burn dropped two spots in turn due to bad finishes.

Please vote above on which point system you'd like to use for 2011.

A third option should be "Keep the old points", that's what I'm opting for.

I agree with Burn, I think points shouldn't change per race. That would mess up things like bonus points too. Maybe use the current NASCAR system starting on 20, 2 bonus points for the win, 1 for leading at halfway and 1 for leading in the first 20.

Or, with race videos coming in, it is perfectly viable now to easily record who leads the most laps. Only problem would be not knowing who got the bonus till much later.
